Our Aims & Objectives
The Society for Computers and Law is the leading UK organisation focussing on the development of IT-related law
Our objectives are:
- to encourage the development of IT law;
- to educate and inform members of the profession, at expert, intermediate and beginner level;
- to collate and disseminate relevant information for the benefit of members and the profession;
- to provide advice and assistance to members;
- to encourage and promote liberalisation of claims to crown and parliamentary and other copyright, and the use of the Internet, to afford so far as reasonably practicable free, rapid and intelligible dissemination of the law for the benefit of all citizens;
- to provide a forum for discussion of key legal IT issues;
- to assist disadvantaged groups, such as lawyers with disabilities, in participating in the Society's fields of activity.
Addressing the major issues
IT for lawyers and IT related law raise substantial challenges at the start of the 21st century. Issues to be resolved include:
Operational effectiveness - ranging from the choice of hardware and operating systems through to software selection and development for both lawyers and support teams.
Legal matters - such as data protection, computer contracts and software ownership.
The administration of justice - the impact of IT on the Courts.
Education - promoting the benefits at all levels that the use of information technology has to the legal profession as a whole.
SCL is the forum for exchanging information about these challenges. It provides members with the opportunity to examine these matters and take a proactive approach to them.
