SCL Information Governance Conference 2008

March 6, 2008

The last two months have seen enormous demand for safe guidance on data handling. There is widespread concern that breaches of good data practice will wreak havoc in an organisation and damage its reputation irretrievably. In response to that demand and to alleviate that concern, SCL has arranged a special conference at short notice. The Conference is to take place on 1 May and SCL members are advised to move rapidly to fill the available places. An early booking discount of £50 is available for bookings before 1 April 2008.

Information governance has rapidly become an integral part of organisational strategy in both the public and private sector. Organisations of all types and size are generating ever greater volumes of sensitive data and that data must be handled lawfully to avoid damaged reputations and unnecessary costs. Breaches of the law can result in enforcement notices, fines and even criminal convictions for directors and managers.

The SCL Information Governance Conference will tackle this fast-moving subject to provide authoritative, practical advice for legal advisers and their clients. The panel of expert speakers provide the essential balance that the legal adviser requires – this is an area where a firm understanding is needed of both the practicalities of data governance and the legal obligations and liabilities that apply. The speakers will give an insider’s view of the challenges facing organisations and distil that collective experience into practical know-how on information governance.

The speakers include Vincent Geake of Partnerships UK (who was formerly CIO at the Home Office) who will give a non-legal view on how information flows should be managed. Leading data protection expert Christopher Millard of Linklaters will explain how information governance has become a boardroom focus, how disclosure risks can be managed, highlight the hazards inherent in e-mail and document management and offer some practical solutions to mitigate risk. The Conference will be chaired by David Berry of Charles Russell, who is Chair of the SCL Privacy and Data Protection Group. Other speakers include Tom Ilube of Garlik, Roger Bickerstaff of Bird & Bird, Gillian Cordall of Maclay Murray & Spens and Michael Colao of Dresdner Kleinwort.
