The explosion in the use of Big Data is mirrored by the rise in references to the Internet of Things. Neither concept is widely understood. Both Big Data and the IoT will have a major impact on society and the practice of law in the next decade.

This module offers an opportunity to understand the concepts, grasp the many legal issues that surround them and hear about their real-world implementation and impact.

This event will focus on:

1.  What is data?

  • Data vs big data
  • What is the IoT (to the extent to which it works with big data)?

2.  The law

  • Rights in data
  • Copyright
  • Database rights
  • Data protection
  • Monetising big data – big insights

3.  How its used

  • Real world examples – the use of mobile datasets for business intelligence
  • New business models

This event is the tenth Module of the SCL Foundations of IT Law Programme.

The SCL Foundations of IT Law Programme is intended to provide a comprehensive overview of everything a practising IT lawyer should know.

The aim of the SCL Foundations of IT Law Programme series is to provide a foundation for lawyers who are qualified practitioners (2- 5 years PQE) who have decided that they want to specialise as IT lawyers.  SCL's two year rolling programme of twelve modules will cover all the key areas of practice in IT law. By attending the SCL seminar programme you can be confident that you will have the know-how and understanding to advise effectively across the whole range of IT law issues.
