On Monday 15 June 2026, Keir Starmer announced that access to social media will be banned in the UK for users under 16, in what he described as “real change for our children and our future”, setting out plans which will go further than the pioneering ban in Australia. The plan includes a ban on all the main social platforms with separate restrictions on online products such as gaming apps, including removing the option to chat to strangers.
Against this fast-moving policy backdrop, Professor Chris Marsden will explore what policymakers, regulators and technology lawyers can learn from the Australian experience, and whether platform regulation can realistically deliver safer online environments for young users.
Chris Marsden is Professor of Artificial Intelligence, Technology and the Law and Director of the Digital Law Group at Monash University in Melbourne and is internationally recognised for his work on AI regulation, digital governance and technology law. A leading adviser to governments and international organisations for more than 25 years, Chris has authored five major research monographs and over 100 academic and policy publications on internet regulation, AI law and digital rights.
