The Society of Computers & Law is delighted to invite you to our upcoming webinar, “Quantum Technology: Exploring the legal issues, policy and regulator approach, and practical use cases“.

This session is designed to move beyond the sci-fi hype to discuss what quantum technologies mean for organisations today and in the future, where the law currently stands on quantum technologies, how regulators (particularly in financial services) are reacting, and how legal teams can prepare.

All registered attendees will receive a quantum technologies primer in advance of the session – a concise introductory summary document designed to get you up to speed on the fundamentals before the session begins.

Speaker Bios:

Andrew Joint, Partner, Simmons & Simmons LLP
A Partner in the Digital Business Team at Simmons & Simmons LLP, Andrew is a technology focused lawyer who is recognised by Chambers & Partners and Legal 500 as a leading IT and Technology lawyer and is a ‘key individual’ in their global AI rankings. He specialises in all aspects of technology, with a particular focus on emerging technologies such as AI and quantum.  He leads the Quantum Group at Simmons & Simmons having previously been Managing Partner at Kemp Little LLP and head of the Legal Advisory business at Deloitte Legal.  He has been involved in the Society of Computers & Law for over 20 years, most recently as part of their London Committee.

Samantha Funnell, VP Legal & IP, Nu Quantum
Sam is VP Legal & IP at Nu Quantum Ltd, a pioneering Cambridge-based scale-up that is developing world leading Quantum Networks and distributed Quantum Computing solutions. Sam has over 30 years’ experience in commercial high-tech IP and licensing, and contributes significantly to the company’s operational excellence and legal affairs, leveraging her vast knowledge and experience to help drive Nu Quantum’s success.  Prior to Quantum, Sam worked in the fields of cryptography and artificial intelligence for a decade.  Prior to this, Sam worked in microprocessor design, system-on-chip, SaaS and software, as Chief IP Counsel at ARM. Sam started her career drafting patents for telecoms related inventions for nascent standards setting technology companies.  Over the years, Sam has worked with a number of early-stage entrepreneurs and start-ups with a variety of technology and business strategies.

Laura Wright, Barrister, 4 Pump Court
Laura is a barrister at 4 Pump Court and specialises in technology and IP disputes. She is regularly instructed in a wide range of technology-related disputes involving computer systems, internet services and software across a variety of industry sectors. Laura’s academic background encompasses both law and technology; in 2022, Laura completed an MSc in Computing Science at Imperial College London. She is ranked as a “Leading junior” in IT and Telecoms in Legal 500 and Chambers & Partners. She, along with Rebecca Keating, is co-author of “A Practical Guide to Quantum Computing and the Law”.

Rebecca Keating, Barrister, 4 Pump Court
Rebecca is a barrister at 4 Pump Court with a particular focus on technology disputes. She is called to the Bar of England and Wales and the Bar of Ireland. She has been instructed on a wide range of technology-related disputes from project failures, the use of artificial intelligence, cyber-attacks, cryptoassets to quantum computers. She is ranked as a “Leading Junior” in IT and Telecoms in both Legal 500 and Chambers & Partners. She is also an appointed member of the ICO’s Technology Advisory Panel. Prior to joining 4 Pump Court, Rebecca worked at Dropbox’s European Headquarters. Rebecca, along with Laura, is co-author of “A Practical Guide to Quantum Computing and the Law”.

Charlie Markham, Technical Specialist, Financial Conduct Authority (FCA)
Charlie is a Technical Specialist in the Emerging Technology & Research team at the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), the UK’s conduct regulator for financial services. He leads the FCA’s research into the applications of quantum technologies in financial services, exploring both the opportunities and regulatory challenges that quantum computing, communications, and security present.

Charlie co-authored an award-winning white paper on quantum security for the financial sector with the World Economic Forum and has been instrumental in shaping the FCA’s regulatory approach to emerging quantum risks. He also led the joint research initiative between the FCA, the UK Quantum Software Lab, and National Quantum Computing Centre to map the evolving landscape of quantum applications in financial services, working closely with industry, academia, and regulators. Charlie’s work focuses on bridging technical innovation and regulatory insight, helping to ensure the safe, trustworthy adoption of quantum technologies in financial markets.
