What is SCL?
The Society for Computers and Law is the leading educational charity for the tech law community, with a UK-wide vision and global significance.

Our mission is to inform and educate legal and technology professionals, academics, students and the wider audience on the impact of IT on law and legal practice. SCL works to promote ideals of best practice, thought leadership, and the fostering of a global tech law community.

How do I join SCL/what are the different types of membership?

Why should I join SCL?
As the UK’s leading organisation for lawyers at the intersection of technology, regulation, and litigation, SCL provides cutting-edge insights on key tech law topics, including AI governance, cyber risk, and digital disputes.

Is corporate membership available?
Corporate membership is not currently available but we can offer bespoke solutions for organisations wishing to sign up their teams. Please email hello@scl.org with any queries about this.

What are the SCL Groups?
There are various SCL groups formed by core committees of tech lawyers with expertise in different fields. Find out more here.

How do I join an SCL Group?
Email hello@scl.org detailing which group you would like to join, and we will add you to the mailing list so you can be kept up to date with the group’s activities.

I’m a student, how can I get involved with SCL?
There are lots of ways to get involved with SCL as a student. SCL membership is free for students – sign up here. Why not apply to become a Student Ambassador? Or get involved via Student Bytes – our dedicated online content hub covering technology law, policy and regulation and LawTech/LegalTech, run by and for students.

How do I book a place at an event?
If you wish to attend an event please book online. If you encounter any issues with booking online, please email hello@scl.org
Fees can be paid by credit card or bank transfer. All invoices for attendance at SCL events must be paid within 14 days of the invoice date unless otherwise stated in the event terms and conditions.

Can I speak at/host an SCL event?

Can I sponsor an SCL event?

What is the SCL Tech Law Essentials Programme?
SCL Tech Law Essentials is our core online training programme delivered by experts and designed to equip you with the latest insights and skills. It addresses new legal challenges and offers solutions to emerging issues. This programme is indispensable at every stage in your tech law career, either as an introduction or a refresher.

Does SCL have an accreditation scheme?
Yes, the SCL Accredited IT Lawyer Scheme is a new recognition programme for experienced professionals working at the intersection of law and technology. Designed to celebrate commitment, expertise and engagement in the field of tech law, accreditation offers a mark of distinction for those shaping the digital legal landscape. Does SCL encourage diversity?

Is there a code of conduct for SCL events?
Yes. SCL is dedicated to providing a harassment-free conference experience for everyone, regardless of gender, gender identity and expression, age, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, ethnicity, religion (or lack thereof), or technology choices. We do not tolerate harassment of participants in any form. Sexual language and imagery is not appropriate at the event or online. Participants violating these rules may be asked to leave the event at the discretion of the organisers.

Does SCL operate Chatham House Rules at events?
As an educational charity, SCL aims to be as open as possible and therefore Chatham House Rules are rarely applied at SCL events.
