SCL Essay Prize

June 30, 2005

This year’s SCL Essay Prize has been awarded to Frazer Hanrahan, a 24-year-old LLM student in Law and Computers at Queen’s University Belfast with a BSc from the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology. Frazer’s view on the set topic, “Categorising information: a product, goods or a service?”, was described as “the most original” of all the entries. His call is for an international consensus creating a special classification for information.

Frazer wins a cheque for £1,000, the opportunity to spend one week with the Technology Group at Wragge & Co LLP (www.wragge.com) for vacation work experience and free entry to SCL events up to the value of £500. On being told of his success, he described himself as “absolutely delighted to have won and a bit gobsmacked to tell the truth!” Frazer was keen to acknowledge the contribution to his success by staff at Queen’s, especially Professor Philip Leith “who has been a great support to me in my transfer from IT to law and in encouraging my interest in this area”. He also expressed his gratitude to the whole of the Computers & Law team: “I have enjoyed your magazine and site immensely and have found it indispensable during my studies”.
