SCL (the Society for Computers and Law) is a registered educational charity that seeks to cultivate discussion and provide foundational and advanced training at the intersection of information technology and law.

What are SCL’s Charitable Aims?
The advancement of education in the field of Tech law / legaltech, including; operational effectiveness, legal matters, the administration of justice, education and continued professional development at all levels
SCL is the forum for exchanging information about these challenges. It provides members with the opportunity to examine these matters and take a proactive approach to them.

Why should I join SCL?
SCL presents a cornucopia of resources including articles, news, blogs and insights from thought-leaders across the sector. These can be accessed online, from our magazine or from our newsletter. We manage and facilitate an average of forty events per year – these can be seminars, panel discussions, round table events, podcasts, competitions and blogs.
Our training and events include meetings, lectures, updates, round tables, consultations and conferences on all topics from black letter law to more specific, esoteric topics. You can explore new fields, or simply or brush up on the basics using our Tech Law Essentials online, podcasts, slides and key takeaways from events you’ve attended. This support goes on as you develop in your field, we have a Jobs Board detailing Tech law opportunities, and year-round events to keep you on top of your game, from student to partner level.
Is corporate membership available?

What are the SCL Groups?
There are various SCL groups formed by core committees of tech lawyers with expertise in different fields, the groups are either regional or topical and you can find out about them here.
How do I join an SCL Group?
Email hello@scl.org detailing which group you would like to join, and we will add you to the mailing list so you can be kept up to date with what the group is doing.
I’m a student, how can I get involved with SCL?
There are lots of ways to get involved with SCL as a student – including becoming a Student Ambassador, taking part in the Student Tech Law Challenge or Competing for our Student Essay Prize.
How do I book on to an event?
If you wish to attend an event please book online or email hello@scl.org and request an invoice. Fees can be paid by credit card, bank transfer or cheque (cheques should be made payable to “Society for Computers and Law”). All invoices for attendance at SCL events must be paid within 30 days of the invoice dateunless otherwise stated in the event terms and conditions.
How are SCL event bookings confirmed?
Your booking will be confirmed automatically if you have paid online or by receipt of an invoice and/or email if you have booked via the SCL office. You will also receive joining details prior to the event. Unless an event has sold out, emails advertising SCL events are sent to our membership up to the date of the event, the final email is often entitled “last chance to book”. Please note that receipt of further marketing emails about the event you are already booked to attend does not mean that you no longer have a place.
How do I pay an invoice?
Can you pay online or email hello@scl.org and request an invoice which will contain a payment link. We do not accept payments over the phone.
What are SCL’s booking terms and conditions for its events?
Application online or by email constitutes a firm booking and an undertaking to pay the event attendance fee. Cancellations will not be accepted (and refunds made) unless received in the Society’s offices in Bristol at least one week before the date of the relevant event. The cancellation of a booking for a conference may also incur an administration cost.
What is SCL’s cancellation policy?
Substitute delegates: If you are unable to attend, a substitute may attend in your place provided that they pay the appropriate registration fee. It may be necessary for reasons beyond the control of SCL to change the content/timing of the programme and/or speakers.
Can I speak at/host an SCL event?

Are slides/event content available to delegates after an event takes place?
As an educational charity, we try our best to provide our delegates with tangible learning outcomes and share the slides whenever we can. However, please note that we cannot share slides without the speakers’ express permission, and therefore slide sharing cannot be guaranteed.
Can I get back copies of the SCL Magazine, Computers & Law?
You can! We charge a small fee of £35. If you would like to order a back copy of C&L magazine; email hello@scl.org.
What core training does SCL have to offer?
SCL offers multiple online resources including; SCL Tech Law Essentials, SCL Back to Basics and other online resources which can be found here.
What is the SCL Tech Law Essentials Programme?
SCL Tech Law Essentials is a range of online seminars that cover crucial, foundational training through multiple facets of tech law covering key topics for anyone new to tech law; anyone wanting an introduction to an unfamiliar topic or anyone wanting a refresher. There is something for everyone at every level – in private practice, in-house or consulting or just interested in a particular aspect of tech law. You can purchase each Module individually or you can choose to purchase Modules 1-6 as one complete pack. SCL members will receive a discount of £20 per Module when buying the Modules 1-6 pack.

Is there a code of conduct for SCL events?
Yes. SCL is dedicated to providing a harassment-free conference experience for everyone, regardless of gender, gender identity and expression, age, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, ethnicity, religion (or lack thereof), or technology choices. We do not tolerate harassment of participants in any form. Sexual language and imagery is not appropriate at the event or on Twitter and other online media. Participants violating these rules may be asked to leave the event at the discretion of the organisers.
Does SCL operate Chatham House Rules at events?
As an educational charity, SCL aims to be as open as possible and therefore Chatham House Rules are rarely applied at SCL events.
